How Does the ‘Earn Your RBT’ Program Work?

The Earn Your RBT with Applied ABC program is intended to encourage and support the next generation of mental health specialists and ABA therapy providers. Candidates who sign onto the program are given access to free training materials, 40-hour RBT coursework, BACB registration, and a network of clinical support experts. We’ll walk you through every step of the RBT credentialing process, from sign-ups to scheduling your RBT exam.

Applied ABC will cover the following costs – with an estimated $1,050 value – as you work to earn your RBT credential:

  • BACB Enrollment Costs

  • RBT 40-Hour Course

  • RBT Study Materials

  • BCBA Assessment

  • RBT Exam Fees (first attempt only)

The process of earning your RBT can be completed in as little as one month. As soon as you sign up, a member of our RBT support team will reach out to help you get started. Next, you’ll complete the 40-hour RBT coursework while Applied ABC deals with all the administrative paperwork. Once you’ve finished the course, we’ll schedule a BCBA assessment (which is required to earn your RBT) with one of our in-house specialists. The last step is to schedule and pass your RBT exam, aided by the study and training materials provided by Applied ABC.

What Is an RBT?

Registered Behavior Technicians (RBTs) work one-on-one or in small groups to help individuals with learning or behavioral challenges overcome limitations and reach new heights. RBTs work under the direct guidance of a clinical supervisor – typically a Board-Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) – to collect data, make observations, implement behavior plans, and carry out therapy-based treatment using ABA practices.

RBTs utilize practical ABA techniques to help children and young adults overcome maladaptive behaviors and achieve key development goals. Every individual with autism has their own unique developmental challenges and needs, meaning no two clients will have the same treatment plan. This wide variability means that RBTs often help clients with learning or developmental challenges in the following areas:

  • Enhancing social skills and relationship building

  • Decreasing maladaptive or disruptive behaviors (self-harm, tantrums, aggression, etc.)

  • Increasing overall level of functioning and independence

  • Building key cognitive and critical thinking skills

  • Practicing daily living skills (personal hygiene, dressing, etc.)

What Are the Benefits of Earning an RBT?

Becoming a Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) allows you to distinguish yourself from your peers in the mental health field and qualify you for jobs that require an RBT credential. For context, there are currently around 2.74 million people in the US workforce who hold a B.A. in Psychology, according to Data USA. Despite the surplus of psychology majors, only 26.7% of recent graduates work in jobs “closely related” to their field of study, per estimates from the American Psychology Association.

In contrast, there are only around 70,000 RBTs in the entire world, according to data from the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES).

Whether you’re still in school or have years of work experience in the mental health field, earning your RBT can help open new doors and create opportunities to uplift members of your local community. What’s more, your RBT credential can follow you anywhere but needs to be renewed every year. So, whether you’re planning to settle down or move to a different state in the future, your RBT will continue to be relevant to employers and clients alike.

What Happens After I’ve Earned My RBT?

After you’ve earned your RBT credential, Applied ABC will immediately start looking for an open case in your area. Once a case is found, we’ll help prepare for your very first ABA therapy session and introduce you to the supervising BCBA. Together, you and the BCBA will work as a unified team to implement a personalized treatment plan and provide at-home ABA therapy services.

Our home-based ABA therapy offers families a streamlined, convenient way to access our services, and helps the children we support feel more comfortable. Hopefully, you’ll fall in love with this line of work and continue to be a valued member of our team well into the future. If not, you’ll walk away with a free RBT credential and around 6 months of real-world ABA experience.
